Andy Murray Reveals His Biggest Surprise Since Signing Up To Coach Former Rival Novak Djokovic

Sir Andy Murray has returned to Melbourne — and this time, he might actually get to enjoy it.

The retired tennis legend and former World No. 1 is in Australia for two main reasons: to coach his former rival and current No. 1 Novak Djokovic (more on that shortly), and to unveil his exciting new ad campaign for Uber Eats. Naturally, our first question was about the most provocative tennis film ever made: Challengers.

“I didn’t quite get it,” Murray confessed about the 2024 film, featuring Zendaya, Josh O’Conner, and Mike Faist in a long-standing ménage à trois/tennis rivalry.

“But I think that’s just me not having that kind of artistic, creative mindset,” he continued in his signature deadpan style. “Obviously, I’ve played tennis on the tour and sort of know what it’s like, and [Challengers] wasn’t what I’ve experienced. But maybe some of the other players had a different experience?”

The aspect that resonated with the Scottish champion was the fierce rivalry among tennis players.

“There are certainly some pretty intense rivalries in the locker room, but they’re more about tennis and not so much centered around a woman,” he remarked.

In Murray’s 19-year career, he encountered some intense rivalries, particularly with Serbian legend Novak Djokovic. The tennis world was taken aback when, in late 2024, Murray was announced as Djokovic’s coach. (Murray was equally surprised, receiving the call during a round of golf.)

“It’s been different, a rather unusual and unique situation,” Murray said about their new collaboration.

“I have a deep understanding of what it’s like to play against him, more insight into his strengths and weaknesses than most people and most experienced coaches would. So there are certain areas where I definitely feel I can assist him. It’s been good, quite interesting.”

“The one thing that has perhaps surprised me a bit about him — not that there hasn’t been a clash. It’s more about the communication and openness. He desires a lot of input.”

“He encourages you to ask him numerous questions while he’s on the court, he wants to hear your perspective. He doesn’t agree with everything I say, but he seeks dialogue and extensive communication.”

Regardless of what transpires during the Australian Open — Djokovic is eager to reclaim the championship after being ousted in the semi-finals last year — it will be a vastly different experience from Murray’s Uber Eats commercial.

The latest celebrity-driven ad from the Uber Eats team features a disheveled Murray sprinting away from a pair of very enthusiastic Uber Eats delivery partners, determined to deliver Murray to a waiting customer. (“We get all kinds of stuff now,” one of the delivery partners says menacingly.)

“I’m not really a fast food person,” Murray admits, but he mentions that he “used Uber Eats frequently while traveling around the world, for dinners after a long day, I’d get sushi and such.”

Does he have any guilty orders? You know — those times you order from a restaurant just five minutes away, or during those hangover days when you reach for the app a third time within 24 hours.

“I would order ice cream, that would probably be my guilty pleasure.”

You can catch Andy Murray in nearly every Australian Open ad break — or spot him in the crowd.

And for everything you need to know about the 2025 AO, head right this way.
