We Need To Talk About The Summer I Turned Pretty Dinner Scene Because What Was That?!

Episode three of the new The Summer I Turned Pretty season was released last night and, oh my goodness, I’m still reeling. Although there were definitely some slower parts (why are we concerned about Taylor’s mom’s financial issues?), two significant revelations were unveiled.

In case you missed it, at the conclusion of episode two, (while Belly’s brother was literally stuck in a hospital bed post-coma), our main character decided to forgive the local frat boy and confirmed cheater, Jeremiah. Following their reconciliation, the immature Jeremiah decided to PROPOSE. Yes, propose.

There was no ring, no kneeling down, just a question, ‘Isabelle Conklin. Will you marry me?’ with a Benson Boone song dramatically playing in the background. Belly, STAND UP.

Thankfully, episode 3 starts with Jeremiah proposing in a more traditional manner. On one knee, ring in hand (though they’re in a frat house bedroom – ick). This ring, however, has stirred up quite the buzz online, with even the Empire State Building’s official TikTok page mocking the minuscule diamond.

As Belly’s best friend Taylor remarked upon seeing it, “Is this a diamond or a sliver of tin foil?”. Ooft.

Viewers also observed that Jeremiah (a character who famously doesn’t wear glasses) had to put on his specs to search for the tiny ring in his bedside drawer.

I’m sure Bellyjere supporters would claim that this proposal is “romantic” and “low-key.” But maybe it’s a sign that two college students (aged 20 and 22) SHOULDN’T GET MARRIED.

Anyway, the couple decides to keep their engagement (and tiny ring) a secret until after Susannah Fisher’s memorial garden dedication dinner. Because Belly has famously never made Susannah’s days about her before. No way.

Conrad decides to attend after all, and the entire family (minus Belly and Steven’s dad) sits down at the table. In a display of Conrad’s superior character, he orders the salmon entrée (the cheapest item) after Laurel announces the dinner is on her card. Jeremiah and his wealthy Dad? They opt for the $75 Surf N’ Turf, naturally!!!

As Laurel, Jeremiah, and Conrad’s dad Adam share their kids’ achievements at the table, Belly decides that this is the perfect moment to announce their engagement. After all, her fiancé has just been criticized by his father for being a “super senior.”

“We’re getting married… in August,” Belly declares. Her mom immediately questions if it’s a joke. Pregnancy accusations fly around the table. Conrad looks as if he’s just been stabbed with that seafood platter.

I know my frontal lobe is fully developed because I’m 100 per cent on team Laurel here. Jeremiah has no job, no money, owes his Dad $20k, and proposed to her outside a hospital after cheating on Belly. WHAT. Laurel suggests the couple move in together or adopt a cat instead of committing to marriage before even graduating college.

Adam mentions that Jeremiah better not expect his deceased mother’s ring. That’s when Belly retrieves the tiny ring from her pocket, proving their engagement to her family and further breaking Conrad’s heart.

Of course, the dinner is immediately ruined. Belly and Jere storm out, still trying to kiss in front of the restaurant. As Steven says, “Read the room!!!!”.

Then, arguably the most heartbreaking scene of the episode unfolds. As the families leave in different cars and Conrad stands stunned outside the restaurant, Radiohead’s “No Surprises” plays, with the poignant lyric echoing: “This is my final fit / My final bellyache”.

My final BELLY ACHE. BELLY ACHE. Omfg. I’m sick.

By the way, no one apart from Belly’s friends even knows about Jeremiah’s cheating yet. Yah. Messy.

Rumor has it, Conrad is still at the restaurant…

I can’t wait to see what fresh chaos episode four brings.
