France To Recognise Palestine As A State, As Ceasefire Talks Fail & Gaza Famine Worsens

French President Emmanuel Macron has recently declared that France will officially recognize Palestine as a state, with this decision set to be formalized at the United Nations General Assembly in September. The timing is particularly significant — this announcement arrives as Gaza endures extreme suffering, which aid organizations are now describing as catastrophic. The blockade by Israel has led to famine conditions, resulting in numerous deaths in recent days. (Israel attributes the lack of aid to Hamas.)

In a statement on X, Macron emphasized France’s stance: “Peace is possible.”

He stated, “In line with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the state of Palestine.”

Macron also directly called for an “immediate ceasefire in Gaza to provide relief to the civilian population,” urging the return of all hostages, an increase in humanitarian aid, and the demilitarization of Hamas.

France’s recognition marks it as the largest and most influential European nation to take this step, joining over 140 countries globally — including a growing number in Europe. This decision by France places immediate pressure on countries such as the UK and Germany, which have refrained from making similar moves as violence persists.

However, not everyone is supportive of this decision. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar outright rejected France’s announcement, describing it as “ridiculous and not serious,” claiming, “A Palestinian state will be a Hamas state.”

The Israeli government continues to argue that such actions reward what they label as extremism, while Israel maintains its ongoing siege and military operations in Gaza.

Gaza’s Humanitarian Crisis: Catastrophe Without End

As world leaders debate, ordinary Palestinians face a crisis. The situation in Gaza has deteriorated from dire to nearly unimaginable. According to numerous aid organizations, including Doctors Without Borders, Amnesty International, and Oxfam, famine is now prevalent across the strip, with thousands at risk of starvation. Over a thousand people have died recently in desperate attempts to secure food as aid trucks are obstructed and Israeli assaults persist.

The UN and World Health Organization have both described the situation in Gaza as “man-made mass starvation” directly linked to aid restrictions and military actions.

At least 45 people have died from starvation in the past four days according to The Guardian.

“This deepening crisis affects everyone, including those trying to save lives in the war-torn enclave … when caretakers cannot find enough to eat, the entire humanitarian system is collapsing,” stated Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), on Thursday.

Lazzarini mentioned that a colleague in the area conveyed to him, “People in Gaza are neither dead nor alive, they are walking corpses.”

According to UN data, at least 59,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023, with over 143,000 wounded — the majority being civilians.

Ceasefire talks between US & Israel breakdown

Hopes for ending the violence have nearly vanished for now. Ceasefire negotiations underway in Qatar have collapsed. Steve Witkoff, US Middle East envoy, explained the decision to withdraw the American team from talks this week: “We have decided to bring our team home from Doha for consultations after the latest response from Hamas, which clearly shows a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza… While the mediators have made great efforts, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith.”

Israel also recalled its negotiating team, with local media describing this as an effort to intensify pressure on Hamas.

According to TRT Global, the withdrawal of both teams was coordinated, effectively halting any progress.

The main disputes revolve around issues such as the release of hostages, prisoner swaps, and where Israeli troops would redeploy following a truce — points that have repeatedly thwarted any chance of halting the bloodshed.

UK, Saudi reaction, and growing global pressure

France’s decision has intensified calls for the UK government to recognize Palestine. A cross-party committee of British MPs stated clearly: “It seems that the Israeli government is not listening to the UK. And while it listens to the US government, it only does so sporadically,” according to Yahoo News.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared that “a ceasefire will put us on a path to the recognition of a Palestinian state and a two-state solution which guarantees peace and security for Palestinians and Israelis.”

His statement continued: “The suffering and starvation unfolding in Gaza is unspeakable and indefensible. We are witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe.”

Starmer is now under pressure to turn words into action, as France’s decision places the spotlight on every other Western government.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, hailed France’s recognition as “historic,” and leaders across the Middle East are urging more nations to follow suit.

What happens now?

While diplomatic efforts move forward, Palestinians in Gaza continue to endure horror on a historic scale.

The world’s major aid organizations warn that the crisis could become irreversible if immediate changes are not made.

As Macron states, “The urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and to bring relief to the civilian population.”
